October 12 2009: Sony Pictures Home Entertainment release DOGHOUSE on UK DVD & Blu-ray Monday 12 October 2009 Plus there's a Fantastic 4 STAR review in this months EMPIRE Magazine by top film critic Kim Newman. Direct Link: Doghouse Review "This is the sharp, laddish, creepy, funny war-of-the-sexes horror-comedy Lesbian Vampire Killers wanted to be. Doghouse manages to have its exploitation cake, with all the bloody icing a splat-fan could want, but still eat it in the spirit of revolutionary self-criticism as pointed jokes are made at the expense of the heroes' attitudes. A bunch of blokes - including contemporary British icons Danny Dyer, Noel Clarke and Stephen Graham, all fresh from films about hooligans - visit an out-of-the-way village for a lads' weekend and find the womenfolk infected by an out-of-control bioweapon which has turned them into hungry, man-eating monsters. When asked what kind of disease only affects women, the most unreconstructed dickhead in the gang suggests, "Bird flu?" The menfolk gamely suffer a series of humiliations at the teeth, claws, scissors and axes of the frothing harridan 'zom-birds', with Dyer's repeated catchphrase, "The ladies love me," setting up his mates' decision to use him as live bait. Among the creatures are a number of female stereotypes - a hairdresser with swift-snipping shears and a large warrior witch with a sword are the most dangerous, but you also get schoolgirls, barmaids, a dentist (with drill), a bride etc. When Dyer briefly wonders if they ought to be killing these dangerous creatures, he's told, "This is not the time to stop objectifying women." The script is witty about the uselessness of men, who can't resist rating which killer monsters are the most shaggable or taking time out of a life-or-death crisis to play with toy cars, but it has enough genuine scares and suspense scenes to deliver proper horror movie thrills. A major step forward for British horror director Jake West, of Evil Aliens fame, and one of the freshest, most overlooked UK films of recent years. Make sure it's huge on DVD." Doghouse is currently playing a number of Festivals around the world including Sitges in Spain. Fantastic Fest in Austin, Texas. Fantasy Film Festival in Germany and Fantastik Film Festival in Sweden. Check out some of the recent reviews online:

June 16 2009: New Review! "Jake West's Doghouse is an inventive and bloody take on the zombie genre that packs a gruesome and hilarious punch. Rare is it that a horror-comedy actually delivers laughs and thrills but Doghouse does so throughout. Danny Dyer finally gets to give his cockney wide-boy style of acting some much needed charm, creaming every ounce of wit from Dan Schaffer's ever engrossing script which is far deeper than some cinema goers will appreciate. But let's not forget that this is a horror movie at heart and the effects from Karl Derrick really do impress with the Zombirds outdoing each other in the gross-out stakes! It's a battle of the sexes that deserves multiple viewings."

June 12 2009: Interview and Reviews! A great interview about Doghouse and filmmaking here:IndieMoviesOnline: The definitive Jake West interview And here's what the press are saying about Doghouse..."*** stars. You wait ages for a horror movie in which beery, unreconstructed blokes are set upon by sexy man-eating women, and then two come along. However, the contrast between Horne and Corden's bloodless, laugh-free Lesbian Vampire Killers and Jake West's gory, funny 'splatstick' comedy could not be more stark. The magic ingredient here is Dan Schaffer's sly script, which constantly undercuts the film's inherently sexist premise... The crucial difference is, while 'LVK' celebrated its protagonists' leery lad-mag misogyny, Doghouse points up the Neanderthal blokes' deep Freudian fear of being castrated by women... West sails dangerously close to indulging the sexism he aims to mock: many of the Zombirds are dressed like strippers or porn fantasy figures. But then Schaffer throws in an ironic line like: 'Now is not the time to stop objectifying women' and the dick swings the other way. And you'd have to be barking mad not to cheer when the lairy lads risk life and limb to save their gay pal Graham from the Zombirds' nest." " **** stars. This laddish but smart horror-comedy is a breakthrough for director Jake West -- it's a major leap forward from his ramshackle earlier pictures. As in the lamentable Lesbian Vampire Killers, as a bunch of blokes on a weekend boozing trip in the country fetch up in a village entirely populated by angry female monsters Ð but this is much more cutting (and funny) in its depiction of fallible dolts whose regulation sexism gets them in hor water, and offers a novel spin on the zombie virus concept as a bioweapon turns all women into feral cannibal creatures. In the village, which has a creepy League of Gentlemen feel the action escalates, the blokes find the time to raid a toyshop and improvise weapons out of water-cannons and fuel or a distraction from a remote-control car and a severed head. Contemporary British icons like Danny Dyer, Noel Clarke and Stephen Graham gamely suffer a series of humiliations at the teeth, claws, scissors and axes of the frothing harridans, with Dyer's repeated catch-phrase 'the ladies love me' setting up his mates' decision to use him as live bait. It rings true that even with their lives in dire peril, the guys pause to discuss which of the monsters trying to kill them is the fittest. "Team FrightFest saw DOGHOUSE last night at it's really good fun. Gory, funny, nicely acted and a terrific slant on zombie movies. Think a stiletto heeled SHAUN OF THE DEAD. It's easily Jake's best movie.. It couldn't be more typically British either, one aspect that is really going to make it popular internationally." "Thank God for Danny Dyer. Compared to colourless celebs trained in what not to say, the East End boy is a breath of foul-mouthed air... He was offered Lesbian Vampire Killers long before Horne and James Corden. His new flick, his 20th since his debut in Human Traffic a decade ago, has a similar theme Ð mates wind up in a village full of female zombies Ð but it's much funnier." "**** stars. ZOO's very own Danny Dyer tries a hilarious twist on Shaun Of The Dead." "*** stars. [Doghouse is] stylishly directed, wittily scripted and deliciously gross in parts. And it's better than Lesbian Vampire Killers... exactly what you want some Saturday nights." "*** stars. A nicely gory comedy-horror flick that is a diverting bit of lads' entertainment. Dyer, Clarke and Graham are fine (and amusing) as the booze boys who get their comeuppance as blood-hungry women hit the mean streets. Far better than Lesbian Vampire Killers, it has great gore gags." "Jake West's low-budget British movie is so jaw-droppingly bonkers that it actually deserves to be seen." "Ace horror make-up by Karl Derrick, who also worked on the first two Harry Potter films... [the script] delivers a handful of proper belly-laughs against expectations. Doghouse is much, much better than its nearest joy vacuum that was/is Lesbian Vampire Killers." "Three films this week argue that the male of the species is dumber than the female, if sometimes more colourful. In Britain's Doghouse (comedy horror), an all-male driving weekend ends in a time-warped village where the female population has turned into zombies. Daft but fun." "*** stars. If you've got a soft spot for hard man Danny Dyer, you'll love this... Silly but funny!" "Must-see movie... Danny would bring out the beast in any woman! You're in for a treat this week Ð assuming comedy-horrors full of blood-thirsty zombies is your thing! The yummy Danny Dyer and five friends head into the country... well worth a look of you're in need of a good giggle." "*** and a half stars... Stephen Graham stars, as does Emmerdale totty Adele Silva and also, look out for this month's loaded cover star, Jessica-Jane Clement."

13 Feb 2003: The Shock Movie Massacre shoot goes awesomely well. Big gore drenched thanks to Art Director Neil Jenkins and Tris & Tim from Life Creations for the ultimate fantastic exploding head. Poor Ms. Booth's head will never be the same! Plus the other "Unholy Trinity" directors were all on set helping out - so many big thanks to Mr. Adam Mason and Alex Chandon. This has really got us all raring to go with the Unholy Trinity project, and financing noises are positive. Also cheers to Emily Booth who got so comfy on the torture chair she fell asleep!, and Howard and Will from OPI for their support. Jake is currently handling the editing, while LLyr Williams is handling CG and FX chores. Here's some Shock Movie Massacre images to whet your appetite:

It promises to be the best show in this genre since The Incredibly Strange Film Show. For the Title Sequence Jake promises something wild, sexy and gory! Razor Blade Smile Sequel Update: Jake was commissioned to write a Razor Blade Smile sequel script for Manga Entertainment/Palm Pictures (America). Entitled RBS II: The Devils Vendetta, the script was delivered to Manga in Febuary 2002. As no finance has been forthcoming Jake would advise not to hold your breath waiting for this. "As a sequel it was so wildly different from the first film it probably freaked them out too much to consider making. But who knows it might still happen.". However Jake is working on a new vampire opus The Nightmares of Sin Red, which frankly he considers, "will kick the shit out of RBS anyway. Sin Red really rocks."
